Equilibrium by Korean designer Jaewoo Ahn is an exploration into light, form, space, and life using a pulley system. The installation features a spherical glass lighting, crafted by glass artist J Junghoon, and pendulums, combined into a state of equilibrium, driven by gravity and physical forces. To get a better idea of this unique pulley system, let’s reviist some basic physics: When multiple forces act upon an object simultaneously, the state in which the total resultant force is 0 is referred to as the ‘equilibrium of forces’. Read on to understand how Ahn translated this observation into a poetic creation.

Throughout the process of creating Equilibrium, Jaewoon Ahn repeatedly added weight to maintain the equilibrium of the lighting. ‘This process reflects the aspect of our lives wherein we strive to find balance amidst unstable situations,’ writes the designer. The blown glass by J Junghoon (see more here), symbolizes introspection and inner growth, while the light transforms the space by the force applied to the pendulums. The entire structure fully embodies the inherent properties of blown glass.
