i29's villa unfolds with five interconnected volumes around central patio in the netherlands

Open Parkvilla by i29 architects

i29 architects has designed Open Parkvilla in Limburg, in the Netherlands, converting a former military terrain into a residential park area. Embracing the natural surroundings, the area now comprises 43 spacious plots nestled within a wooded environment. The project focuses on maintaining the existing road network and green structure while creating a high-quality residential space offering tranquility and lush surroundings. The villa comprises five interconnected volumes varying in size and placement, resulting in a diverse exterior appearance from every angle. The minimalist exterior is clad in a consistent envelope made from clip bamboo, emphasizing the sculptural nature of the structure and blending it into its scenery. The house’s design incorporates greenery, varied ground levels, and long sightlines to create varied living experiences. Natural light filters through the space throughout the day, illuminating different areas. Additionally, a central patio enhances the flow of the entire ground floor, providing fresh air, natural light, and extra space. This feature serves as a connection that blurs the boundaries between indoor and outdoor areas, elevating views and extending sightlines.

Crafting Distinctive Interiors at open parkVilla

The architects at i29 intentionally designed varying ceiling heights and finishes in each room to differentiate and define specific areas within the house, giving each space its own distinct character. The living area is positioned slightly below ground level, offering a unique perspective and enhancing the overall spatial experience. Inside, custom-made furniture and built-in closets showcase the interior’s quality. The design incorporates materials like oak wood panels with an oil finish, continuous cement flooring, and Grigio Alpi natural stone elements throughout various areas. Specific materials and finishes are used in different parts of the house, such as dark-oil-treated oak veneer in the entrance, kitchen, living room, and lounge, while lighter oak veneer accents spaces like the bathroom and walk-in hallway.

Specific rooms reveal distinct ceiling treatments, with open ceilings painted white in the bathroom and ground floor office, showcasing light oak cabinets. Natural fir wood is used for open ceilings in the living room, ground floor lounge, and upstairs bedrooms, while closed ceilings define areas like the kitchen and bathrooms. Additionally, the entrance’s toilet space is constructed with brick and finished with a lime wash for a unique touch. The garden design complements the outdoor space, tailored to suit the villa’s form and openings, creating a harmonious interplay of architecture, interior, and landscape.
