first look at the USA pavilion design for expo 2025 osaka

New Orleans-based studio Trahan Architects reveals its design for the USA Pavilion ahead of the much-anticipated Expo 2025 Osaka in Japan. Serving as a cultural outpost for the United States, the project celebrates the best of contemporary American architecture, innovation, culture, and industry. The pavilion sits halfway between the Forest of Tranquility and the East Entrance Plaza, exuding an open and minimalist aesthetic with two expansive wings and a square framed by panoramic LED screens depicting dynamic images of iconic American urban and natural landscapes. The program also includes exhibitions spotlighting sustainability, space exploration, education, and entrepreneurship. With a design inspired by ancient Japanese footbridges, the plaza arches gently, creating a sense of balance and a meaningful visitor journey through the space.

two wings bridged by a translucent and suspended cube

At the center of the USA Pavilion, bridging the two wings of the building is a brilliantly illuminated translucent cube suspended overhead, appearing weightless in its simplicity, anchoring the plaza. Inside the ‘canyon’, visitors become fully immersed in the vistas of the United States, juxtaposed with the mirrored surface of the hanging cube, creating an opportunity for contemplation on the relationship between people, the built world, and the environment. Inside, the team at Trahan Architects includes immersive exhibits and storytelling that transport visitors to urban and natural locations across the United States and to outer space — a chance to explore the moon and other galaxies. ‘Gathering across cultures and world regions to share ideas and learn from each other is essential to building a more understanding and human world. As architects, our mission is to bring people together in spaces that cultivate a greater sense of place and strengthen appreciation for our planet,’ notes studio founder Trey Trahan.

trahan architects’ commitment to reuse and sustainable goals

In its construction and following the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, the pavilion will incorporate innovative and sustainable materials, as well as reused steel, tensile fabric, HVAC, plumbing, and other materials from disassembled structures from the Tokyo Olympics. The organizers will store these materials at Expo 2025 Osaka following the close of Expo 2025 to be reused in the future. This approach follows the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The USA Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka will be Trahan Architects’ first built project outside the United States.
