spec unveils a versatile creative studio in tokyo

SPEC has transformed a utilitarian space marked by raw concrete finishes and unadorned white surfaces in Tokyo, Japan, into a minimalist visual playground. Spread across the fifth and sixth floors of a modest six-story building, Hoth.Studio presents a versatile space available for seasonal apparel brand looks, product photography with models for e-commerce sites, and exhibitions. Accommodating for these various possibilities of use, the design team utilizes the plain white walls and ceilings, wooden partitions, and polished concrete floors to carve out a distinct photo spot within its restrained environment. Amid this blank interior canvas, a notable winding staircase with irregular stonework infuses texture and a sculptural element, while distorted mirrors generate a dynamic spatial experience.

hoth.studio explores a minimalist interplay of light and texture

Hoth.Studio’s fifth floor introduces a sculptural concrete staircase and a concrete box encasing the elevator. Polished to reveal encapsulated gravel, the staircase extends beyond a mere functional element and takes center stage as a dynamic platform, elevating the presentation of apparel and models against the backdrop of orderly white walls and concrete floors.

Moving upward to the sixth floor, Tokyo-based SPEC faced the spatial challenge of a flat surface creating dead space. Rather than opting for conventional design solutions like storage, the team adopted an avant-garde approach. A distorted glass panel with a mirrored surface spans the full 4.4-meter ceiling, introducing a distinct visual dimension to the minimalist interior. This feature opens up various avenues of experimentation for photographers and art directors, serving as a canvas for creative exploration for all those who step into the studio.
