CASA POMPEI stands in a narrow plot in El Portal, Miami

Designology’s Fabio Santoriello, interior design technologist, and Ezgi Fitos, award-winning architect, construct an elongated residence ‘Casa Pompei’ on a narrow corner lot in El Portal, Miami, for personal use. The firm focuses on the realization of signature real estate development projects, attending to sustainable, site-specific contemporary design. Built under a subtractive design principle, the building stands distinctly minimalist. Favoring neutral colors and clean lines, expanses of white walls are complemented by warm wood finishes.

the residence forms around an interior courtyard

The creative duo at Designology constructs several walls and partitions of ‘Casa Pompei’ for future repurposing as vertical gardens. The addition of an interior courtyard invites greenery into the structure. Aiming for a tropical aesthetic, the plantation takes a large part of the internal arrangement of the volume. The interplay between the pared-down minimal forms and lush greenery balances out throughout the residence.

The design draws from ancient Pompeii architecture and the ‘Megaron’, organized around a central interior courtyard and keeping the exterior facade windowless. The arrangement maximizes space and privacy ensuring plentiful natural light. The entrance opens directly into the courtyard and pool, a central space to which all rooms have access. Each room is equipped with courtyard-facing sliding glass doors, allowing for direct interactions with the rest of the house while preserving the option of seclusion.
