The Emergency Stool provides seating to unexpected guests

The Emergency Stool, a collaborative creation by CANVAS and Nik Bentel Studio, redefines the concept of extra seating in the space-conscious environment of NYC. The design aims to provide a solution for unexpected guests or impromptu situations without adding to the clutter.

Crafted from standard ¾” plywood, this stool is more than just a functional piece – it’s a work of art. In case of an emergency need for additional seating, the stool offers an 18″ tall seat without occupying extra floor space. Assembling and disassembling in a matter of seconds, the stool comprises only four pieces, showcasing efficiency and simplicity in design.

The aesthetics challenge the perception of plywood as an unfinished and rough material. The frame, coated in a natural stain finish, contrasts visually with the vibrant red-painted stool pieces. Drawing from flat-packed furniture, the design celebrates this style as a form of art, transforming a conventional item into a visually striking and functional piece.

With dimensions aligning with typical art posters, the stool integrates seamlessly into home decor. The Emergency Stool marks the beginning of collaborations between creative practice CANVAS and Nik Bentel Studio, hinting at more innovative designs to come.
