During NYCxDESIGN 2023, Artemest unveils its latest endeavor: WEST CHELSEA by Dimorestudio at its Artemest Galleria in New York. As Dimorestudio commemorates its 20th anniversary this year, co-founders Britt Moran and Emiliano Salci have curated an extraordinary exhibition that promises to captivate art enthusiasts and design aficionados alike. Artemest, the online platform showcasing contemporary Italian craftsmanship and design, hosts the exhibition at its Chelsea Gallery at 518 West 19th Street in New York, which will be on view until September 2023.

A Nod to the Golden Era: Inspiration from 1960s and 1970s America

WEST CHELSEA is a museum-like exhibition, boasting an exclusive capsule collection of one-of-a-kind furniture pieces designed by Dimorestudio. Complementing this unique ensemble is a hand-picked selection of Artemest pieces, carefully curated by the esteemed Milan-based studio. With its roots deeply embedded in the 1960s and 1970s American aesthetic, the exhibition draws inspiration from Billy Wilder’s iconic 1960 film ‘The Apartment’ and Colin Higgins’ acclaimed 1980 film ‘Nine to Five.’

Transforming artemest galleria: Dimorestudio’s Artistic Vision

Upon entering WEST CHELSEA, visitors will be enveloped by an ambiance that transports them to a bygone era. Dimorestudio has meticulously transformed the gallery space, painting the walls and ceilings in a warm olive-green hue. The floor is elegantly adorned with a bespoke carpet by Pierre Frey for Dimorestudio, featuring the studio’s signature print, the Dacia oro. This extraordinary pattern mimics the texture of a timeworn surface, revealing its rich history through layers of footprints and stains, as if it were transplanted from another environment into the gallery.

Furniture as Works of Art

Within the exhibition, eleven exceptional furniture pieces by Dimorestudio are tastefully arranged, reminiscent of an art museum. Each item exudes exquisite craftsmanship and artistry, transcending their utilitarian purpose. Noteworthy pieces include the Pierre screen, featuring a laminated brushed steel side and a two-tone glossy lacquer side, adorned with intricately carved and embossed glass sections and polished gold-plated brass details. The Bonalumi cabinet, crafted from laminated wood, showcases brushed and polished steel accents, with doors adorned in laminated wood, polished steel, and cast bronze. Adding a touch of opulence, the floor-to-ceiling lacquered wood Pizzo lamp features seven rotating arms in polished gold-plated brass, each adorned with delicate lace lampshades.

Beyond the Main Gallery

Past the primary gallery space, Dimorestudio has curated two additional exhibition areas, fashioned as functional rooms where white, black, and steel dominate the palette. These spaces serve as a testament to the studio’s commitment to creating harmonious environments. Displayed within are iconic brands of Italian industrial design, including BBB Italia, Cassina, Cappellini, Driade, La Permanente Mobili Cantù, Martinelli Luce, Matrix International, Tecno Spa, Tato, and Ynterior. According to Dimorestudio, these brands are integral to any setting as they communicate the rich history of design and infuse personality into interiors.

Celebrating Italian Design: Iconic Brands Take Center Stage

To enrich the experience, the installation also incorporates artworks by a selection of esteemed Artemest artists. Among them are sculptures by Benedetto Ferraro, captivating tapestries by Caterina Frongia, evocative paintings by Maurizia Carantani, and mesmerizing photographs by Luca Capuano.
