design exhibition takes over modernist landmark in mexico city

An unlikely confluence has occurred in Mexico City, amidst the vibrant energy of Zona Maco México 2024. The modernist residence of the late architect Pedro Ramírez Vásquez, designed and inhabited by him since 1958 until his death in 2013, became the stage for a contemporary design installation. This unique showcase, orchestrated by design retailer Studio 84, saw Nilufar Gallery‘s Open Edition furniture collection integrates with the architect’s own spaces and objects to bridge eras and design disciplines. Maria Dolores Uribe, founder of Studio 84, says:I’m thrilled to welcome Nilufar and cc-tapis to the enchanting Casa Pedro Ramírez Vásquez. Studio 84 is honored to showcase their exquisite creations in this iconic setting, blending diverse pieces in a truly timeless and captivating manner.’

Chosen as the venue for Studio 84 and Nilufar Gallery‘s showcase during Zona Maco México 2024, Ramírez Vásquez’s iconic home transcended its usual role. Nilufar’s furniture pieces, curated by founder Nina Yashar, found their place among the architect’s personal belongings and design pieces. This contrast created a dialogue between past and present, tradition and innovation, fostering a new exchange of ideas within the intimate space. Nilufar’s Open Edition collection, launched in 2023, embodies Yashar’s vision of making iconic design accessible to a wider audience. The rooms were occupied by pieces like the Necklace ceiling lamp by Analogia Project and the Tenet and Mensa tables by Filippo Carandini.

Weaving History with the Present during zona maco méxico

Beyond the courtyard, the home’s various rooms offered a glimpse into Ramírez Vásquez’s life and work. His own furniture designs coexisted with Nilufar’s Open Edition pieces, creating a harmonious blend. The meticulously organized collection of books, documents, and architectural plans offered a window into the architect’s mind, while 1968 Olympics memorabilia served as a reminder of his broader societal contributions. This temporary installation exemplifies the power of collaboration. Bringing together the works of different designers and artists within the late architect’s own home fostered an exciting exchange of ideas, highlighting the enduring legacy of design and its ability to evolve and adapt.

Nilufar founder Nina Yashar comments: ‘I am honored to have been welcomed into someone’s home, invited to linger and be heard. Javier recalls his father Pedro Ramírez Vàzquez as a captivating conversationalist, and I see this showcase as a tribute to that legacy. Design, at its core, is a dialogue — about society, the convergence of eras, routines and aspirations. Moreover, it is a conversation that must unfold among its creators.

This collaboration provides exactly that opportunity, affirming that the timeline of design is endlessly unfolding, navigating an imprecise and concurrently precise path through time. This scenario offered the ideal opportunity to announce our collaboration with Studio 84, whose work I’ve always admired and consider to be representatives of our values.’
