In a bronzed sculptural expression of the aleatory textures of honeycomb cardboard, Héctor Esrawe premiers his new Gear Coffee Table at Sotheby’s East Hampton Gallery in New York. Created for the gallery’s ‘Harmonious Contradiction’ exhibition, the limited-edition table series encapsulates the Mexican designer’s creative approach which seeks to reassign value to ordinary forms and materials. With Gear Coffee Table Héctor Esrawe looks to honeycomb cardboard, cut up and rearranged. The textures and ridged vertical patterns of the material’s exposed edges are here rendered in polished bronze and composed as a series of sleek, stacked, circular volumes that unfold to form the centerpiece table.

Héctor Esrawe revalues aleatory cardboard textures

Gear Coffee Table is the newest series of work by Héctor Esrawe, founder of the multidisciplinary Esrawe studio. Based in Mexico City, the studio develops furniture, interior design and architectural solutions, focusing on fine details and quality. With his new project, the Mexican designer reassigns value and intention to the common material of honeycomb cardboard — a design approach characteristic of his body of work. With Gear Coffee Table Héctor Esrawe draws on the textured corrugated form of the cardboard after being cut in rounded shapes, revealing on its edges a series of aleatory vertical patterns and a sculptural expression. ‘The possibility of materializing and containing these patterns into bronze and exposing them with radial cuts over the cardboard in different formats and scales defines a series of objects with utilitarian capabilities, in this case a coffee table, that is expressed as an over scaled jewel or geared ornament’, comments the designer.

The ornamental Gear Coffee Table is part of the fourth and final summer exhibition at Sotheby’s East Hampton Gallery and the first collaboration between MASA and Sotheby’s. The group exhibition presents eight contemporary artists producing polished bronze or brass floor works by Mexico City-based MASA Galeria, in conversation with a selection of post-war and contemporary works curated by Sotheby’s.
